# Sun & moon

> Sunrise, twilight, moon phases, equinoxes and where both bodies are right now.

The **Astronomy** tab is computed from your station's coordinates - no external
service, nothing to configure, and it works offline from the weather entirely.
It needs only that your station has a latitude and longitude, which
[connecting WeatherLink](https://pro-weather.com/docs/getting-started/connect-weatherlink) discovers
automatically.

## Sun

- **Sunrise, sunset and solar noon**, with a progress bar through the day.
- **Day length**, and how much longer or shorter today is than yesterday - a few
  seconds around the solstices, over four minutes a day near the equinoxes.
- **Civil, nautical and astronomical twilight**, each as a dawn-to-dusk range.
- **Azimuth and altitude** right now: which compass bearing the sun is on and how
  high above the horizon.
- **The next equinox and the next solstice**, in the order they arrive.

## Moon

- **Phase**, with its illuminated fraction and a matching symbol.
- **Moonrise, moonset and transit** - transit being the moment it crosses your
  meridian, its highest point of the night.
- **Azimuth and altitude** right now.
- **Distance**, the number behind a "supermoon".
- **The next new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter**, soonest
  first.

You can hide the moon panel under **Settings**, leaving the sun on its own.

## About the precision

Equinoxes and solstices are shown with a time because the calculation behind
them is good to a few minutes. **Moon phases are shown as dates only** - the
lunar model behind them is good to a couple of hours, and printing a clock time
next to that would be false precision. A paper almanac gives you the date for
the same reason.

## Polar latitudes

At high latitudes the sun does not always rise or set. Days without a sunrise or
sunset show no time and no day length rather than an invented one; the phase of
the sky (daytime, civil, nautical or astronomical twilight, night) is still
correct, because it is read from the sun's actual altitude.
